Windows 7 Manager Discusses Energy-Efficiency Boost

Stephen Berard, recipient of Microsoft’s quarterly Environmental Action Award, helped develop features in Windows 7 to make computer servers more energy efficient.

REDMOND, Wash. – Feb. 8, 2010 – When it comes to energy efficiency, Stephen Berard says computers are like lightbulbs.

“You can leave a lightbulb on all the time, but if you leave the room when the light is on, it’s wasted energy,” Berard said. “What we do in the operating system version of that is to turn the light off when you’re not in the room.”

Berard, a senior program manager for the Windows Kernel Team, is the recipient of Microsoft’s quarterly Environmental Action Award for his work making the Windows 7 platform, including Windows 7 running as workstations as part of systems running on Windows Server 2008 R2, more energy efficient.

“I was completely floored when I found out I was selected,” Berard said. “It’s a huge honor. We did a lot of really amazing things in Windows 7, and when I say ‘we,’ I truly mean ‘we.’ There was a big group of folks across Microsoft that were involved.”

Increasing energy efficiency has always been a focus for the Windows team, Berard said. In the past, that has included mobile devices, laptops, and desktop systems. With Windows 7, the energy efficiency focus included computer servers.

Servers consume a lot of energy, and the vast majority of that energy is turned into heat, which then requires air conditioning to cool the machines and to keep them from overheating, he said. This is especially important in datacenters with large numbers of servers.

MVP Open Day 2010 – MSIDC hyderabad

MVP open day was held in hyderabad from 20th January 2010 to 23rd Jan 2010. Continuing its league from the last open day held at GOA in 2009, this event turned out to be a big success, thanks to our MVP lead Abhishek Kant . Every event has its own theme and this event had the perfect coordination of fun and technology. This event was a platform for all MVP’s to share & learn, I met many other MVP’s and had the time of my life.

Due to extensive flight delays day one for me began at 9PM on 20th when i reached Hotel Ista the official hosting venue set for the event, dinner was going on at Istana when i walked in, Seeing the other MVP’s whom i met in GOA made it a refreshing start even after the tiring long day. Just after the dinner the graveyard session started and we all had a great session talking about google vs BING. During that session i met my faces that i knew from years through online communities like Manan & Pavan Kumar .

Day two @ the Open day was a early starter, breakfest again gave me a chance to meet Geetesh Bajaj , Allen & many other MVPs . Right after that we attended the Windows 7 roundtable & then off to MSIDC for the main event. Excellent keynote was presented by Srini Koppolu (CVP & MD, MSIDC) , After attending the keynote we all had a group photo & tea.

Sessions were divided into three categories as Consumer track, developer track & IT pro track. The first session i attended was Win7 and the way forward for Windows  by Suryanarayana Shastri, Senior PM, WWLG . Lunch was served right after this session & we were all refreshed for the upcoming ones. After two more sessions we all moved out & were taken for Hyderabad outing where we were taken to the Golconda fort and a amazing light & sound show was presented there.

22nd jan was the earliest day for me, Had breakfest with fellow MVP’s & then a roundtable, Right after that we all went to MSIDC for the rest of the day. Technical session and a great open session on Windows client & bing , which gave us a chance to ask and provide with feedback to the product teams.

In this event i met and communicated with many fellow MVP and this made us all closer by another step. I spent some remarkable moments there & met Anand khanse whom i know from a very long time right from the Digit forums. Also met  Raj Pallai & Suprotim Agarwal who were among the ones i already knew from last Open day. Some Event Photographs are attached :
